Street Medicine Team Provides Healthcare to San Bernardino’s Unhoused Populations https://blackvoicenews.com/2024/05/18/san-bernardino-county-homelessness-healthcare-in-action/ Sat, 18 May 2024 07:59:18 +0000 https://blackvoicenews.com/?p=244161 Inside a van that doubles as a mobile clinic, Desteny Benson (right), a clinical support partner at Healthcare in Action, takes the blood pressure of Dominique, a patient in San Bernardino on May 1, 2024. Part of the success of Healthcare in Action is providing services by meeting people where they are. This includes providing onsite lab work and tests, which are typically out of reach for unhoused communities due to lack of access to transportation to clinics, wait times and internet access to receive results.

Kristen Malaby, a Fontana native, was injured in a warehouse in 2017 and found empowerment in organizing nature trash cleanups across the region, and later became a Peer Navigator for Healthcare in Action, forming the first street medicine team in San Bernardino County.
