The Freedmen’s Bureau issued land titles to hundreds of formerly enslaved men and women in Georgia and South Carolina in the months following Sherman’s promise of “40 Acres and a Mule”, but the land was ultimately taken back by the plantation owners, leaving the freedmen with nothing.
